Olga Timofeyeva, Russian senator, member of the Federation Council committee on international affairs, a representative of the Sevastopol legislators, has visited Vestnik Kavkaza and discussed the Day of Accession of Sevastopol and Crimea to Russia, the Victory Day of May 9 and the integration of regions into Russia.
Timofeyeva emphasized that Victory Day was the main holiday in Sevastopol, similar to Navy Day. She noted that almost all houses had been destroyed in the Great Patriotic War, the territory of the city could be filled with a meter layer of bombed rubble.
In her words, Victory Day was always marked by a march of veterans from the Fleet Officers’ House to Lazarev Square.
Olga Timofeyeva approved the idea of granting cities new status for contributing to the Great Victory. She reminded that there were 13 Hero Cities, excluding Brest. She approves the status of City of Military Glory or Military and Labour Glory. The senator reminded that factories were evacuated to Sverdlovsk, Novosibirsk and Baku. Her home city Nizhny Novgorod has the status of City of Military Glory.
Timofeyeva said that the Day of the Accession of Sevastopol and Crimea to Russia will be like a continuation of the February 23 celebrations. She reminded that the population had made the decision on February 23, 2014.
