Lev Travnev becomes mayor of NCFD capital

Yesterday the capital of the North Caucasian Federal District, Pyatigorsk, held mayor elections. Lev Travnev won, the website of United Russia reports.

He received 90.96% or 81,704 votes. Other candidates, Alexander Bratkov (Liberal party) received 3.51%, Mikhail Kachuru (independent) – 3.49%.
The voter turnout was 65.58% or 122,372 people. The total number of people registered at the elections was 136,782.

Vestnik Kavkaza reported earlier that at the end of July 2010 the Duma of Pyatigorsk decided to terminate Travnev’s powers ahead of schedule and organized elections for October 10, 2010.

The initiative was due to a request from local prosecutor, who pointed out the discrepancy between the new charter and the old political system, when the city head was elected from deputies, instead of direct elections.
