Amos: US-Russia-Iran dialogue will help end the conflict in Syria

The US should work together with Russia, Iran and other Middle Eastern nations to seek a political solution to Syria’s civil war, the UN under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, Valerie Amos, said in an interview with Bloomberg.

"We’ve tried to do that with the humanitarian side, to bring those countries together. We got very close, but not close enough. So it’s really hard to see how it can be done," she said.

According to Amos, the six countries with influence on the combatants in Syria are the US, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. The representatives of these countries, she believes, "basically need to sit in the same room and need to have a series of conversations" about how to end the violence and help the parties “neutrally agree to a process that leads to peace". “But we’re nowhere near that," TASS cited the UN under secretary-general.

Amos admitted that none of the approaches that the UN special envoys have tried have really worked.
