The present exercises, I think, are a military-political demonstration of Russian military capabilities to repel any form of aggression, and a signal that we send to Washington and the West that it is futile to talk to Russia from a position of strength and with the language of force," the military expert said.As to the question of what caused such a choice of the Southern Military District, Igor Korotchenko noted that it is a choice made by the supreme commander Vladimir Putin: "I think this is due to the reflection of specific threats in specific areas, based on how we see these threats and how we intend to fend them off," Igor Korotchenko concluded.Major-General Sergei Kanchukov linked the unannounced inspection in the Southern Military District with the completion of the training period in the army. "I do not think that it is related to something else - the international situation or anything else. These inspections are aimed at maintaining constant combat readiness," the expert said. The executive editor of the weekly Independent Military Education, Viktor Litovkin, said that the alarm was raised yesterday by decree of the President.
