Syrian rebels take control of town protected by UNESCO

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that militants fighting the Syrian government have seized control of the southern town of Bosra near the border with Jordan after four days of battles, Interfax reports.

The ancient city of Bosra is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The first mention of the settlement dates back to the XIV century.

There are ruins from Roman, Byzantine and Islamic times in Bosra, including one of the best preserved ancient theaters in the world.
