According to social polls conducted by the IRI, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Minister for Labour, Healthcare and Social Protection David Sergeyenko have an approval rating of 62%. Irakli Alasania, an ex-minister of defense and leader of the Our Georgia – Free Democrats Party, and Speaker of Parliament Davit Usupashvili have a rating of 57%. Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has an approval of 56%. Kakha Kaladze, a vice prime minister and minister for energy, has 48%, leader of the United National Movement David Bakradze 47%, Tbilisi Mayor Davit Narmania 40%.
Nana Devdariani, the head of the Center for Global Research of Georgia, told Vestnik Kavkaza that the IRI polls were not impartial because it was unclear what people were questioned and where. She claimed that the polls were used by the government to affect public approval. In her opinion, U.S. polls should not be trusted, the government should hold independent social polls instead. Devdariani reminded that the social polls before the elections in 2012 favoured the United National Movement.
The expert said that Margvelashvili’s rating was incomprehensible, Bakradze’s approval of 47% was dubious due to the lack of initiative and charisma of the politician.
Georgian politologist Iosif Tsiskarishvili considers the IRI polls fair. In his opinion, the superiority of Margvelashvili over Garibashvili is easy to explain. He reminded that Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili had promoted Margvelashvili as the president. Concerning the popularity of Alasania, the expert said that the party was regarded by the government and Ivanishvili with disgrace. Prosecutors arrested five officials of the Defense Ministry five months ago. No one has been questioned yet, no charges have been declared, so those arrested have an image as political convicts of Georgian Dream.
Tsiskarishvili explained that Bakradze has never been accused of negative conduct as a member of the United National Movement. Moreover, the analyst called him an educated and active politician who had never shown aggression or been involved in an ambivalent situation. In Tsiskarishvili’s words, the politician is one of the very few people who can continue in political life regardless of which party he belongs to.
