Council of Europe to hold forum in Yerevan

The Council of Europe will hold a forum in Yerevan on October 19-21, with the participation of European functionaries, News Armenia reports, citing the information center of the Council of Europe.


The sides will discuss principles and challenges of democracy in Europe. The challenges include trust crisis in political institutions, a loss of interest in policy and the influence of the economic crisis.


The forum will be participated by European and Armenian politicians, social figures, media and science figures.
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland, Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe Thomas Hammarberg and a PACE reporter for Armenia John Prescott.


Approximately 60 representatives of non-governmental organizations, including 16 from Armenia, will be at the conference.
 Previous Council of Europe forums were held in Washington in 2005, in Moscow in 2006, in Stockholm in 2008, in Kiev in 2009. The main topics were human rights protection, political parties, and electoral systems.
