Ukraine refuses to extradite Saakashvili

The general prosecutor's office of Ukraine refuses to extradite the former head of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, considering him to be being persecuted for “political reasons.”

“As a result of an assessment, the general prosecutor's office of Ukraine came to the conclusion that there is the risk that an extradition request for Saakashvili was made by the competent authorities of Georgia with the aim of political persecution. In addition, his extradition would be contrary to the requirements of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of 1950. Under such circumstances, the general prosecutor's office, as the central body of Ukraine on extradition issues, made a decision to refuse to extradite Saakashvili, and our Georgian colleagues have been informed about it," RIA Novosti news agency reports.
