Russia and EU are not interested in breaking ties

Dmitry Danilov, the head of the European security section of the RAS Institute of Europe, vice president of the Russian Association of European Studies, said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza that Russia had always been calling the West its primary partner. He noted that the sanctions have forced Russia to activate cooperation in the east. In his words, the country has problems restructuring financial streams and external economic relations. Danilov added that, despite all the talks about strategic partnership, the sides were competing on international markets.

According to the expert, the trade turnover of Russia with the EU had totaled about 50% until recently. He explained that large Russian business had to reorient and change its strategy because of the restrictions. Western companies are moving business out of Russia.

Danilov called the strategic reorientation very risky because the way the common European space would develop is uncertain. Russia does not want to break off relations with Europe, in his opinion. The expert pointed out that Russia and Brussels were not working on a new formula of relations.

Concerning the Ukrainian conflict, he emphasized the importance of realizing the Minsk Agreements. Failure to comply with the documents may result in any scenarios, including war, concludes Danilov.
