Ukraine should become part of Europe with its new constitution, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Monday at the first session of the Constitutional commission. "It is very important for Ukraine to become part of Europe. That is why it is very important that the constitution corresponds to those norms and principles that are outlined in the European constitution," TASS cited him.
As a successful model of decentralization the head of state proposed to elect Poland. "Ukraine should stay a unitary state," Poroshenko added.
The Ukrainian president noted that the federalization issue may be put up for referendum. "I am ready to put up the issue of changing the state system of Ukraine for referendum if the Constitutional commission sees that that the federalization of the country is necessary," Poroshenko stressed. However, public opinion shows that the Ukrainians do not want federalization, the president noted.
In his speech, he also raised the issue of the state language. In his opinion, only Ukrainian language should have this status.
