Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed an edict to grant Staraya Russa, Petrozavodsk, Grozny, Gatchina and Feodosia status of Cities of Military Glory. According to the Russian federal law passed by the president on May 9, 2006, cities where major battles took place and where protectors showed courage, endurance and mass heroism, including the 12 Hero Cities, will be given status of the City of Military Glory.
Putin’s new edict raises the number of Cities of Military Glory to 40.
Sevastopol Senator Olga Timofeyeva backed the initiative to promote the cities. She reminded that only 13 cities had status of Hero Cities, including Brest. In her opinion, it would be acceptable to grant status of the City of Military Glory or City of Military and Labour Glory. Timofeyeva noted that the main factories in Sverdlovsk and Novosibirsk had been evacuated to Ural. She added that Baku made a contribution to victory in the Great Patriotic War.
