Giorgi Saralidze, a host at Vesti FM, and Sergey Mikheyev, the director of the Institute of Caspian Cooperation, deputy chairman of the Editorial Council of Vestnik Kavkaza, have discussed preservation of historical memory at the Nachalo live broadcast. Saralidze noted that some post-Soviet states, such as Azerbaijan, had grand celebrations of May 9. Georgia, in his words, has been making certain progress in that aspect since resignation of President Mikheil Saakashvili.
Saralidze believes that mass media should encourage the process by talking more about the value state leaders give to the Victory Day.
Mikheyev called the events in Azerbaijan “very demonstrative, healthy and right” in the context of the refusal of many Western leaders to visit Moscow to mark May 9. In his opinion, the problem after the fall of the USSR is that nothing better has been invented than destruction of own historical identity. Mikheyev assumes that it would be better to form a more wise and rational policy instead.
