The main reason why the South Stream gas pipeline project was blocked was to retain the gas route through Ukraine, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said during a conference titled 'Europe and Eurasia: Towards a new model of energy'.
According to him, reports that the reason behind the suspension of South Stream was Gazprom’s unwillingness to observe the rules of the third energy package and European laws are not true. "The only aim was to preserve the status quo, gas transit via the territory of Ukraine. There was no other goal for the blockade," RIA Novosti cited Miller.
"If they think that by blocking the Turkish Stream they will achieve the same goal - this is a mistake," he said.
