Granush Akopyan of the Armenian Ministry for the Diaspora has said that the parliament is considering passing an amendment allowing draft evaders to return to the country, NEWS.am reports.
According to the law adopted in 2003, draft evaders could pay a certain sum to be pardoned for every draft missed until the age of 27. The law was extended. The new amendment will extend it until the end of the draft of 2014. Each missed draft costs 200,000 drams.
Taking advantage of the law, about 900 people were returning to the country. 958 returned in 2014, 61 in January-March 2015. They paid a total of about 800 million drams (around $1.7 million). About 30,000 people are on the wanted list for evading the draft.
