Mogherini promises to facilitate Iran's nuclear talks

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who is meeting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif later today in New York, has promised to assist talks on Tehran's nuclear program.

According to the head of European diplomacy, her main objective is "to facilitate the nuclear talks". "I see it as my main task to make sure that the negotiations proceed in a speedy and good way. A good way means that Iran cannot develop a nuclear weapon and can have its right to deploy a peaceful program like everybody else," she explained.

According to Mogherini, a guarantee that Iran has no nuclear weapons will lead the country to new positions in the region. "I understand very well the concerns of many Arab countries, not only Arab countries, in the region on the role of Iran," she said.

"The best possible approach you can have is, on one side to have a positive outcome of the nuclear talks, so that we can be sure that they cannot develop a nuclear weapon. On the other side, call for Iran to play a major, major but positive role on Syria in particular, to encourage the regime to support a Syrian-led transition," she said.
