Iran denies political context in seizure of US ship

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said at New York University that the seizure of the US cargo vessel Maersk Tigris was sanctioned by a court and had no political context, TASS reports.

Colonel Steve Warren, a spokesman of the Pentagon, said yesterday that Iran detained the ship sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands. According to the officer, the captain of the ship sailing through the Hormuz Strait was forced to move deeper into the territorial waters of Iran.

Moreover, Warren added, the Iranian patrol boats had fired warning shots. No one was injured. A US military plane and the destroyer USS Farragut received a signal from the Maersk Tigris.
