Yerevan to hold first session of EU-Armenian subcommittee for energy and ecology

On Tuesday Yerevan will hold the first session of the EU-Armenian subcommittee for energy, nuclear security, transport and ecology, Arka reports, citing the EU delegation to Armenia.
The meeting will be co-chaired by Armenian Deputy Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, Areg Galstyan, and the head of the department of Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and the South Caucasus at the Directorate General on External Affairs of the EU, John Kjaer.
At the meeting they will discuss the latest energy processes in Armenia and the EU and regional cooperation in the energy and nuclear spheres, including steps being taken to shut down Armenia's nuclear power plant.
The sides will also consider transport, the ecological policy of Armenia, climate change and civil defense.
The EU is providing constant support to Armenia in energy, nuclear security, transport and the environment. Their efforts include an aid package of 59 million euros, including measures for rehabilitation and fulfillment of the miniuml nuclear security standards, renewable energy resources, regional assistance in cooperating with the INOGRATE program and the ‘Baku initiative’.

The EU is also actively assisting in developing regional cooperation for ecological issues, in particular by establishing a Regional Ecological Center for the Caucasus and regional projects concerning climate change and civil defense.


Armenia and EU signed a partnership and cooperation agreement on 22 April 1996, which came into force on 1 July 1999.


The committee for cooperation was established according to article 83 of the agreement. On 17 September 2010 at the 11th session the sides agreed on establishment of a subcommittee to discuss key issues of cooperation in energy, nuclear energy, transport and ecology.
