Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has ordered that the Federal Customs Service start negotiations with Azerbaijan to lift customs barriers for fruits and vegetables, thus halving the expenses of businessmen. Customs barriers may be lifted for trees, plants and food, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
Alexey Alexeyenko, an assistant of the head of Rosselkhoznadzor, said that Azerbaijan may be the first state to gain such a regime. He noted that business will get benefits, consumers will get a higher quality of food, Azerbaijan will guarantee the quality of its products, Russia will monitor the commodities passing the border.
Economist Oktay Akhverdiyev opined that the procedures would have a positive effect on Azerbaijani food producers because Russia is their main purchaser. The expert pointed out the rise in demand for food from Azerbaijan in the last years. In his words, the negotiating process should take two months at most, concluding by the summer.
