Carter: US starts training Syrian rebels

The US Defense Department has started military training of the Syrian opposition, US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said.

"This complex program is very important for us. A second group of rebels will be trained in the next few weeks," TASS cited him as saying.

The program includes training of Syrian rebels to combat the self-proclaimed Islamic State. The training camps are being set up in Jordan, Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. More than 3700 volunteers have expressed interest in joining the program. They are among roughly 400 troops that the US military has already vetted.
