Russian Mistral could sail to China

France is likely to offer the Mistrals which were built for Russia to China during a visit by the French Navy to the Chinese city of Shanghai, a Chinese newspaper Duowei News said.

Due to the sanctions imposed against Russia in connection with the crisis in Ukraine, "the French Navy is unlikely to sell the ships to the Russian Federation." "They will try to sell them to other countries, the potential clients are Brazil, Canada, Egypt and India. Despite the fact that China already has similar projects, China may buy the Vladivostok and Sevastopol ships ordered by Russia," TASS reports with reference to the Chinese newspaper.

A group of French ships is expected to stay at the port of Shanghai from May 9 through to May 15. The group includes the Dixmude, a Mistral-class landing vessel, as well as the Aconit, a Lafayette-class frigate. The newspaper said it's the first time a Mistral-class vessel has called at a Chinese port.
