Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Bloomberg that relations between Russia and the US were normalizing, TASS reports. Igor Morozov, a member of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, said that the US was maintaining relations in fields of mutual interests, aka selective partnership. In his words, the fields include the Iranian nuclear problem, ISIS and the Ukrainian crisis. In his opinion, one of the reasons for the normalization of relations is the upcoming presidential elections of 2016 in the US. He reminded that the Democrats had been fighting endlessly in the Middle East (Libya, Iraq, Syria). The normalization process needs a pragmatic approach.
Vladimir Olenchenko, senior associate of the MGIMO Center of European Research, explained that the US was eager to improve relations with Russia due to Moscow's important role in almost all world processes. The analyst named the three most important components of the normalization process between Russia and the US: equal dialogue, regular contacts and willingness to cooperate in solving problems. Andrey Suzdaltsev, deputy dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Relations at the National Research University – Higher School of Economics, opined that the US was only cooperating with Russia via embassies and chief diplomats Sergey Lavrov and John Kerry. According to the expert, the US wants Russia to join the anti-ISIS coalition, collaborate in solving the Iranian problem and the Syrian crisis. Suzdaltsev believes that the US expects Russia to show readiness to make concessions. The Americans are in a hurry, because Europe has hard times with the sanctions, in his opinion. Normal relations are impossible at the moment, the analyst reckons.
