Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has ratified the agreement between Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic on confidence-building measures in the border area.
The purpose of the agreement is to create a legal framework to strengthen mutual trust in the state border area, and the development of cross-border cooperation.
According to the agreement, the parties coordinate the scale, geographical limits, timing and the number of military and special exercises, notify each other of large-scale military activities and troop movements caused by emergencies, cooperate on prevention of various types of hazards in the area of the state border, exchange information on adverse conditions emerging in the area of the state border, establish close friendly contacts between military border agencies, employees of special services, customs and law enforcement agencies in the area of the state border.
In case of incidents in the area of the state border, the parties should undertake steps to resolve the situation and rectify any damage.
The agreement was reached in Astana on December 15, 2001.
