Iran has announced the successful modernization of its Messad-class
air defense missiles, RBK reports.
Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said that they are capable of
engaging modern aircraft at low and medium altitude and capable of
engaging several targets at a time, Fars News reports.
Vahidi announced the building of the Mersad complex in April 2010. The
complexes were planned as low-range air defense systems. The minister
said that the Mersad is an analogue of missiles in Western countries.
Vahidi said that the Mersad is an alternative to the Russian S-300
complexes. Russia announced in late September 2010 that it would not
ship S-300 complexes to Iran.
