NATO Days start in Azerbaijan

NATO Days stated today in Azerbaijan, the ex-Soviet republic's Defense
Ministry reports, citing Trend. The event will continue until November
5.


Azerbaijan and NATO started cooperation on May 4, 1994, after signing
the "Partnership for Peace" document.


In 2005 Azerbaijan started cooperating with NATO within the framework
of the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) which was planned for
2 years. Today the cooperation is held within IPAP-2 for 2008-2010.
The main goals are establishment of full democratic control over the
armed forces, defense planning and formation of defense budget,
reorganization of the armed forces structure and use of NATO norms and
standards.


In 1999 Azerbaijan used its forces to support peacekeeping operations
of NATO in Kosovo, in 2002 -- in Afghanistan.
