Chairman of Parliamentary Assembly of CE Mevlut Cavusoglu will be the new Chairman of Assembly’s subcommittee on Nagorny-Karabakh, Trend reports.
“The subcommittee has not been appointed yet, however, I am supposed to be it’s chairman”, - Cavusoglu told the journalists on Wednesday. – “It is common practice for PACE’s chairman to head the subcommittee”. PACE hopes that the subcommittee, which starts work in the nearest future, will assist in solving Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict. “We want the subcommittee to work together with Azerbaijan and Armenian delegations, and we hope this work will be a contribution”, - Cavusoglu said.
Cavusoglu is on a first visit to Azerbaijan after his previous year’s appointment. In Baku Cavusoglu met Azerbaijan President Ilkhan Aliyev, Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov, Speaker Milli Majlis Octay Osadov, charmen of parliament’s political parties and heads of NGOs.
Cavusoglu called his first visit to Baku a success. “We saw Azerbaijan’s desire to meet CE’s criteria. There is hope that it will happen under my chairmanship”, - Cavusoglu said. Other than his 10-year membership in PACE, within the visit he discussed the coming parliamentary election.
He was satisfied with to hear that Azerbaijan will carry out free and democratic elections. “We believe the promises we were given. We were assured that the elections will be free and democratic” – head of PACE said.
