Turkey is creating a new department to implement protection of the
state border, APA reports, referring to the Turkish media. The
government has prepared a law "On the General Department on Border
Protection and Offices", which reflects these issues.
The law provides for abolition of the Coastal Guard Command, transfer
of the Command’s personnel, equipment and technology to the General
Department of Border Protection under the Ministry of Interior
Affairs. If the document is approved, the Turkish Border Protection
Department will be able to use heavy weapons to control operations
within the country's borders and monitor phone calls without court
orders.
