Voting started today at 08:00 local time in the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan, Trend reports.
The Azerbaijani Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has reported that 690 candidates will compete in the elections. Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by majority-vote system in 125 constituencies. The previous elections were held in November 2005.
According to information received by the CIS Observation Mission Staff from the polling stations, a positive impression is being observed in the Azerbaijani parliamentary elections , the CIS Observation Mission head, Sergei Lebedev, said today in Baku.
"Voting is proceeding in a calm atmosphere. Traditionally, older people come to polling stations earlier and the youth vote later in the day. According to our records, about 20 percent of voters have participated in the voting at some polling stations, this figure is less at other polling stations. We recently visited polling stations where five percent of voters had participated in the voting, and we see that there is an active voter turnout, voters are now more active," Lebedev said.
Polling closes at 19:00 local time.
