US Defense Minister Robert Gates said that USA will use diplomatic
means and continue economic sanctions against Iran, Reuters reports.
Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu has urged the USA to recognize
economic sanctions as non-efficient, declaring that only a military
threat can force Iran to halt the development of nuclear arms.
The six mediators (five members of the UN Security Council and
Germany) have been trying together with the IAEA to force Iran to stop
uranium enrichment since 2003. The negotiations were halted in 2009
when the IAEA passed a resolution criticizing Iran for the
construction of a second uranium enrichment plant in Qum and urged
Tehran to confirm that no other nuclear facilities will be built.
In June the UN SC passed resolution 1929 introducing additional sanctions.
Iran insists that its nuclear program is peaceful.
