RRussian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov has reported the successful
completion of reforming the military-administrative subdivision of
Russia ahead of schedule.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on the
military-administrative subdivision in July. The 6 military districts
were replaced by 4.
The Moscow and Leningrad military districts became part of the Western
Military District, together with the Baltic and Northern fleets. The
Central Military District consists of Privolzhsko-Uralskiy, the
western part of the former Siberian Military District and Russian
military bases in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Kommersant reports.
The Southern Military District consists of the former North Caucasian
Military District, the Black and Caspian Sea fleets, as well as bases
in Armenia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The Eastern Military District
consists of the eastern part of the former Siberian Military District
and the Pacific fleet.
