In Azerbaijan, the 3rd summit of the heads of the Caspian countries has begun. The presidents of Azerbaijan, Russia, Iran, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan are participating in the meeting.
The Azerbaijani president, Ilham Aliyev, said that defining the legal status of the Caspian Sea should be based on the sea bed demarcation agreements signed by Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
The Iranian president proposed to finish the process of defining legal status of the Sea in 2011.Russia is ready to do anything necessary for the faster harmonization of a convention on legal status of the Caspian Sea. Among the main problems Russian President Dmitry Medvedev singled out were the delimitation of the bed and water area and rules for navigation and fishing , RIA Novosti reports.
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev stated that defining the legal status of the Caspian Sea is obligatory for fruitful cooperation.
