The number of shootings, explosions and murders of civilians, religious leaders and law-enforcement officials in the North Caucasus is not decreasing, President Dmitry Medvedev stated today at a meeting about comprehensive measures to ensure stability in the North Caucasus Federal District, emphasizing that he has “no trust” in the current statistics in this area.
"The operational environment in the district is very difficult and I must admit that it has practically not improved. In the first 10 months of the year 64,000 crimes were registered; while the number of murders in the whole coutry went down by 13%, in the NCFD their number grew by 5%; the detection rate has decreased by almost 10%, although the latter figure requires a separate analysis,” the President said. Also, Medvedev discussed the assistance provided to the security forces by the regional and local authorities. "I am absolutely convinced that the reserves of the heads of the regions are far from exhausted. The security measures in crowded places are insufficient, and this has had sad consequences in some cases. There are very few information activities. Little attention has been paid to cooperation with the leaders of religious denominations, first of all, interaction with the Islamic regions in the North Caucasus ," the President said.Medvedev also appointed Sergey Vasilyev as new Interior Minister of Kabardino-Balkaria
