The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, attended a meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the nations contributing to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Lisbon, AzerTAc reports.
Afghan leader Hamid Karzai, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon participated in the event, opened by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. “This day marks the beginning of a new phase in our mission in Afghanistan,” the NATO Secretary General said.
President Ilham Aliyev made a speech at the meeting, calling his country`s cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance “beneficial”. He added that Azerbaijan was active in NATO`s Partnership for Peace Program and Individual Partnership Action Plan, as well as being closely involved in NATO`s global peacemaking operations.
