European parliament opens path for Ukraine to join EU

A resolution on Ukraine saying that the former Soviet republic can apply for membership of the European Union has been approved at the meeting of the European parliament in Strasbourg.
At the same time, concern about the growing influence of the government on the media, the work of the Ukrainian Security Service, and new electoral rules has been expressed in the resolution, RIA Novosti reports.
