Russia provides humanitarian aid to Armenia

Armenia has received another portion of humanitarian aid from Russia -
5,000 tons of wheat and 1,000 tons of sunflower oil, News Armenia
reports.


The documents on the aid were signed at the Russian embassy in Armenia
between officials of the Russian and Armenian Ministries of
Emergencies, in the presence of Ambassador Vyacheslav Kovalenko.


Kovalenko noted that Russia decided to help Armenia despite the grain
export embargo. He added that it is the way strategic partnership is
formulated.


The ambassador spoke of the joint efforts of the Armenian and Russian
peoples in World War Two, at the earthquake in Spitak, and the
extinguishing of fires in Russia with the help of the Armenian rescue
services.


Armenia received the cargo on November 25 in Bagramyan.
Nikolai Popov, head of the section for emergency humanitarian reaction
of department of international activities of the Russian Ministry of
Emergencies, emphasized that Armenia receives the aid for free.


The first portion of wheat equal to 1010 tons was received in Armenia
on October 1.


Armenia consumes 650 000 - 720 000 tons of grain annually, it uses 435
000 - 450 000 tons for food purposes, it produces 168 000 - 175 000
tons, the deficit is compensated via import, which reached 380 000 -
420 000 tons in the last five years.
