The European Commission is planning to approve proposals for
negotiations on the simplification of the visa regime between
Azerbaijan and Armenia next year, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs
Cecilia Malmström, stated on Monday at a session of the European
Parliament in Strasbourg.
The commissioner noted that among the participants of the "Eastern
Partnership," only Ukraine and Moldova have existing agreements on
visa facilitation. The ratification process of the same agreement with
Georgia is in the process, and recently the European Commission put
forward a proposal to start negotiations on the agreement on
simplifying the visa regime with Belarus.
Launched in May 2009 in Prague, the Eastern Partnership initiative is
aimed at political and economic rapprochement between the EU and
Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
