The USA intends to make the UN Security Council lift the sanctions on Iraq, imposed on the country since Saddam Husein was in office, RIA Novosti reports.
There is no certainty that other countries will support this spontaneous decision of the US. This Wednesday the Security Council will hold discussions on the problem of Iraqi sanctions. The US, as the current chair of the Security Council, expects a positive reaction from all 15 members to the resolution developed by them. American diplomats believe that the aim of the resolution is supporting the progress achieved by Iraq and that the authorities of the country have almost finished the formation of a democratic government.
In February 2010 the Security Council stated that it would be ready to lift the sanctions if Iraq ratified the additional protocol to the IAEA treaty. Iraq had signed the treaty, however, it hadn't ratified it.
