8 gunmen were killed during a special operation in Makhachkala, the capital city of the Republic of Dagestan, RIA Novosti reports. Among them was a senior militant commander, Amir Magomed Sheikhov.
The group barricaded themselves inside a private house in Makhachkala. The residents of the house were evacuated.
The gunmen are suspected of killing a policeman in the city on Thursday. The assailants opened gunfire on a police patrol when they were stopped.
