Kazakh parliament set to extend presidential term

Deputies of the parliament of Kazakhstan have initiated a constitutional amendment on prolongation of the current presidential term of office.

According to the deputies, considering the historic role of the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, as founder of their independent state, they initiated a proposal to the president on holding a republic-wide referendum on changing the constitution and extending Nazarbayev's term of office.

The amendment says that one person cannot be elected president of Kazakhstan more than 2 times in succession; however, the first president of Kazakhstan is excluded from this restriction.

The bill was sent to the Senate. The initiative provides for the presidential term to last until December,6th 2020. They claim there is no political alternative to Nazarbayev today.
