Medvedev signs decree to cut number of federal officials

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday signed a decree reducing the number of federal officials by 20% until 2013, RIA Novosti cites the Kremlin press service.

According to the decree, the number of federal officials is to be reduced by 5% in 2011 and 2012 and then by 10% in 2013.

The number of federal officials in Russia has almost doubled in the past five years, from around 600,000 in 2005 to over 1.1 million in 2010.

The decree follows an instruction made by Medvedev in June. The measure could save up to 40 billion rubles ($1.3 billion) from the Russian federal budget.
