Russian State Duma ratifies protocol on CIS border control

The Russian State Duma ratified the protocol on organizing cooperation
between border control services in regulating crisis situations on
external frontiers with the CIS today.


According to Rosbalt, the protocol was signed on 5th October 2007 in
Dushanbe by the heads of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan,
Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The document is aimed at implementing the
agreement on cooperation of border troops of CIS countries in case of
crisis situations on their external frontiers.


The document provides for the heads of countries to elect the
leadership of a group on crisis situation settlement. The commander
then determines the structure of the joint headquarters, its staff,
objectives and the functions of its subdivisions. Financing and
technical support for the border group in the region of crisis
situations will be determined by the Council of CIS Premiers.
