Russian President Dmitry Medvedev supports the creation in the North
Caucasus of a Council of Elders. According to Russia24, the president
recommended the initiators to find a way to use the elders’
experience.
The chairman of the president’s council on assistance in developing
civic institutions and human rights, Ella Pamfilova, was the
initiator.
According to a member of the Federation Council, Aslambek Aslakhanov,
the idea of creating an All-Caucasian Council of Elders “may work
out”. It is a tradition for elders to solve crucial issues in the
Caucasus. The council will contribute to the stabilization of the
situation in the North Caucasus and help in solving a whole set of
problems: international, interconfessional, in everyday life, he said.
Medvedev highlighted the idea of issuing grants for small businesses
in the North Caucasus region. Pamfilova believes that the same
practice, used in Dagestan, may be beneficial for attracting young
people to create their own businesses.
