EU aids victims of Azerbaijani flood

The European Commission issued 65,000 euros to aid the victims of
floods in Azerbaijan, Trend reports, citing an EU statement.


The aid will be used to purchase food and household equipment, like
gas stoves, beds, hygiene items. Approximately 2,200 people were
evacuated from the Sabirabad region.


The heavy rains in May caused floods and landslides in seven central
and south regions of Azerbaijan. Three people died and 70 000 people
were affected. 20,000 buildings, 50,000 hectares of land and pastures
were submerged. The Sabirabad region, where 24,000 people were
affected, suffered the most. The Red Cross Society helped the
government with the evacuation.


The Red Cross Society activities were financed by the Disaster Relief
Emergency Fund (DREF) and the International Federation of the Red
Cross and the Red Cross Society (IFRC)
