Japan has been struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8, RIA Novosti cites the US Geological Survey as saying.
The earthquake center was 373 km north-east of Tokyo. Tokyo and its port city Yokohama were damaged.
The famous Kudan Kaikan reception center collapsed. There were injuries.
A 10-meter tsunami hit Kamaishi on the coast of Iwate, north-eastern part of Honshu Island. Dozens of vehicles were washed away by the waves.
Military helicopters were sent to evaluate the damage.
This has been the largest earthquake in Japan in the last 7 years.
Another earthquake was registered with a magnitude of 7.4 at Miyagi Prefecture. A 6-meter tsunami warning was announced. Citizens were ordered to go uphill.
Warnings about 10-meter tsunamis on Honshu coast were announced. Most of the high-speed highway from Tohoku to Honshu was destroyed.
Kamaishi was hit by a 4.2-meter tsunami at the Iwate Prefecture.
Sendai was hit by a 10-meter tsunami. A whole residential district was washed away.
At least 4 million houses in Tokyo lost power, as well as the nearby districts. Power cuts were seen in the prefectures of Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Yamagata and Niigata.
Tsunamis hit the Sakhalin Island as well. Populated areas in three districts of the Sakhalin may be under threat. The vessels in the Pacific Ocean are protected at the bays of Peter the Great and Usuriysky, a source from the navy headquarters said. He added, that the water rose by an average of 90 cm.
