Russia is ready to help Japan recover from the earthquake and tsunami, President Dmitry Medvedev said today at a State Council meeting in Khakassia, RIA Novosti reports.

Russia's willingness to help Japan was also expressed in a statement by the Emergency Ministry of Russia. Chief of the National Center for Crisis Management of Emergency Ministry Vladimir Stepanov said that the special squads "Centrospas" and "Leader" are ready to go to Japan if they are asked for help. According to him, six aircraft of the department are ready to take off, if necessary, including one with a mobile hospital on board.

The earthquake that occured to the northeast of Japan is the strongest in the history of the country. According to the Japanese meteorological service, its magnitude was estimated as 8.9 on the Richter scale.

A series of strong earth tremors to the northeast of Japan and the ensuing tsunami caused damage to the Pacific coast. The oil refinery in Chiba Prefecture is on fire.
