Georgian-US referral laboratory opens in Tbilisi

US Ambassador to Georgia John Bass, Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri, Healthcare Minister Andria Urushadze and US Deputy Defense Secretary Andrew Beber will open a central referral laboratory of public healthcare on March 18. The laboratory was organized with US support, Georgia Online reports.


The laboratory will reveal grave infections amongst the population and livestock and monitor scientific research.


Realization of the project started in 2006. Construction began in December 2009. The laboratory will start full-scale operation in March 2011. Georgian and US doctors and scientists will work there. The project is worth $100 million.


The laboratory will cooperate with similar laboratories in Bangkok (Thailand) and Nairobi (Kenya).
