Tatarstan proposes re-establishment of Ministry for Nationalities

Russia needs a new concept for its ethnic policy and the Ministry for Nationalities, the Chairman of the State Council of Tatarstan, Farid Muhametshin, told the 4th conference of Tatarstan, RIA Novosti reports.


He explained that every ethnicity has its particular problems in protecting its language, culture, customs and traditions.
The chairman said that the Russian Ministry of Regional Development spends most of its time on issues related to housing and utilities.


Muhametshin expressed hope that the commission for realization of national state policy being established at the moment will find time for thorough work on all issues.


Tatarstan must preserve its unique culture and language, enriching other peoples.


The conference of Tatarstan hosted over 80 representatives from 26 Russian regions.


Tatarstan was formed in 1998. A deputy of the Russian parliament from Tatarstan, Ildar Gilmutdinov, has been the chairman of the council since 2007. The organization consists of representatives from 26 Russian regions.
