Makhachkala has hosted a meeting of the Governmental Commission of the Republic of Dagestan on the Russian-speaking population. The draining of the Russian-speaking population was at the center of discussions.
The participants of the meeting discussed a plan of measures to reduce migration and to create conditions for the return and resettlement of the Russian-speaking population in the Republic of Dagestan in 2010-2011, which was approved at a meeting of the Commission in March 2010.
The analysis of a poll on migration has shown that the main causes of migration from the republic are personal and family reasons (about 62%) and work reasons (about 20%). Only 0.3 percent of Russian-speakers who left the republic indicated an aggravation of interethnic relations as a motive for immigration.
The participants of the meeting also discussed projects to promote Russian culture in Dagestan, particularly the construction of a Center of Russian Culture in Makhachkala.
