In Russia, almost 70% of the population in earthquake-prone regions live in buildings that do not meet construction standards, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia said on Friday. According to the agency, this mostly concerns the North Caucasus, the Far East, Sayan, Baikal and the Altai region.
"The former concept of building of residential and industrial buildings in earthquake-prone areas, in contrast to the current approaches, had lower requirements and construction was carried out there according to other rules and regulations," RIA Novosti cites the state department report.
