Armenian Youth Parliament to open in late May

The Armenian Youth Parliament will be formed and operating in late May, chairman of the commission for education, science, culture, sports and youth of the Armenian Parliament Artak Davtyan said, News Armenia reports.


Establishment of the Youth Parliament was initiated by Parliamentary Speaker Ovik Abramyan. The Youth Parliament will be a consultative structure, with its opinion taken into consideration by the Armenian Parliament, he said on Tuesday.


The Youth Parliament will have 89 seats distributed proportionally between youth movements of the parties in the Parliament. 42 seats will be provided for students of state and non-state higher education centers.


The Youth Parliament will be elected rotationally. Its members will be elected by higher education centers, with no involvement of MPs.


Davtyan said that there are 10 people competing for each of the 42 seats.


Seats provided for parliament parties will be distributed as follows: 20 mandates for the Republican Party, 9 for Prosperous Armenia, 5 for Dashnaktsutyun, 3 for Orinats Erkir, two for Heritage.


Young people from the non-parliamentary opposition will have preference.


Davtyan added that the Youth Parliament will operate with the regular parliament until May 2012.
