Leader of the Taliban movement Mullah Mohammed Omar has been killed in Pakistan. There has been no information on the date and details of the operation, RIA Novosti reports.
TOLO channel says Omar was killed in Kvetta, on his way to North Waziristan in Afghanistan.
The leader of Al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, was killed in May. His elimination was followed by statement by Mullah Omar in the area, the US and Italian military and political authorities said.
Osama bin Laden was killed by the US at Abbottabad in Pakistan on May 2. His body was thrown in the sea. Bin Laden was responsible for the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on May 19 that the Pentagon will not reveal details of Laden’s death to protect the military involved in the operation and their families from terrorist threat.
The refusal to reveal details caused rumors about staging of the operation. Some believe that Osama bin Laden has never existed and operated as a virtual character of “world evil”.
The US Administration says that Laden’s DNA and photos match.
Mullah Omar became notorious in 1994, after the soviet forces had left Afghanistan. Omar headed the Muslim Students’ Movement of Taliban in Kandahar, the opposition of President Burhanuddin Rabbani.
Mullah Omar escaped the country when the US forces and the African Northern Alliances crushed the Taliban regime. Some media sources believe that he headed the terrorists in Pakistan, others said he was a nominal figure.
